In 2005, Australia's merchandise trade with Canada consisted of A$1.9bn in imports and A$1.8bn in exports. Around 2000 Australian businesses either export to or operate in Canada every year, with top performing exports including wine (A$255m), nickel ores (A$220m), medicaments (including veterinary; A$62m) and lamb, mutton and goat meat (A$45m). Companies exporting to Canada include food processors (Capilano Honey and Burns Philp); food retailers (Bakers Delight); consumer products retailers; packaging (Amcor); software (Mincom, Adacel and Keycorp); tourism (Wotif.com and Flight Centre); financial services and processing (Macquarie Infrastructure and Computershare); and mining (Ashton Mining and BHP Billiton).

Large Canadian investors in Australia include Placer Dome, Alcan, Nortel and McCain Foods. Other well known Canadian companies in Australia are Air Canada, Royal Bank of Canada and CAE.

Australia and Canada grant each other preferential tariff rates on a limited range of products agreed under the Canada-Australia Trade Agreement (CANATA), established in 1960 and amended in 1973. However, CANATA pre-dates the multilateral trading system and has been superseded by tariff reductions achieved by negotiation in the WTO.

Top 10 Canadian Imports from Australia - 2005

Product

Value
(CAN$ million)

Share in Total (%)

% Change

Inorganic chemicals

603.3

34.5

5.62

Beverages

273.1

15.6

16.53

Ores, Slag, Ash

240.6

13.8

-20.3

Meat

76.3

4.37

1.91

Machinery

72

4.12

-10.19

Sugars

56.7

3.25

33.6

Pharmaceutical Products

50.3

2.88

-18.48

Optical Instruments

45.8

2.62

12.29

Precious Stones

36.9

2.11

32.11

Organic Chemicals

31.7

1.81

-40.72

Top 10 Canadian Domestic Exports to Australia - 2005

Product

Value
(CAN$ million)

Share in Total (%)

% Change

Machinery

370.45

25.09

-12.99

Electrical Machinery

154.41

10.46

25.01

Meat

125.41

8.49

8.17

Vehicles (not railway)

121.01

8.2

31.4

Ores, Slag, Ash

72.07

4.88

122.98

Wood

54.63

3.7

-19.81

Optical instruments

50.89

3.45

32.71

Railway, Traffic Sign Equipments

45.74

3.1

901.15

Pharmaceutical products

34.77

2.36

77.24

Iron/Steel products

32.05

2.17

31.96

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.quebecozclub.com/nadines-corner/2007/4/25/commerce-between-canada-australia.html"><rss:title>Commerce between Canada & Australia</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.quebecozclub.com/nadines-corner/2007/4/25/commerce-between-canada-australia.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Here are a few useful links if you are a Canadian wanting to start a business in Australia or vice versa:
